If you're considering dental implants, you likely have questions about what to expect. Will the procedure hurt? What’s recovery like, and how long does the implant take to heal?

These concerns are completely natural! While the procedure might sound intimidating, many patients find that implant surgery is far more comfortable than they expected.

What to Expect During Implant Surgery

Many of our patients are surprised to learn that the implant placement procedure itself is typically painless. This is because your dental implant dentist takes several steps to ensure your comfort, including:

  • Local Anesthesia — Your mouth will be completely numbed before we begin work.
  • Sedation options — If you experience dental anxiety, sedation options can make the process even more comfortable.
  • Precision techniques — Modern digital implant technology allows for extremely precise, minimally invasive procedures.

Most patients report feeling pressure during the procedure but not pain. The surgical portion also typically takes less time than patients expect, about one to two hours for a single implant.

The Implant Recovery Process

While implant surgery is generally comfortable, some discomfort during healing and recovery is completely normal. Here's what to expect:

  • First 24 hours — This period is typically when patients experience the most soreness, similar to what you might feel after a tooth extraction. Some swelling and occasional minor bleeding are normal.
  • Days 2–3 — Swelling might peak, but pain often begins to subside. Most patients manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers.
  • Days 4–7 — Most discomfort resolves, though you may experience some tenderness when chewing or applying pressure.
  • Weeks 1–2 — By this point, you should be experiencing minimal to no pain.
  • Full Implant Healing — Complete osseointegration (fusion of the implant with bone) takes three to six months, but this process is generally not painful.
