Kids love sweet snacks!
As a parent, you are probably aware that sugary treats can do damage to your child’s teeth. Maybe you have even tried to curb their cravings for sugar, which can feel like a battle of epic proportions if a sweet treat habit is already in the works. They look at you with those big, soulful eyes you love so much and it can feel tempting to give in.
We offer an alternative approach!
Here are some tips to consider when engaging in the sugar battle with your little one:
Tip #1 – Start Healthy Habits Early!
Kids will typically take your lead when it comes to the rules of the household. If you keep sugary snacks to a minimum (or out of the house entirely), your child will grow up knowing that sugar is not the best choice.
This extends beyond dental health, too. Childhood obesity rates are on the rise, and providing healthy snack options as an alternative can benefit your little one in countless ways. Try introducing fruits, yogurt, and low-sugar smoothies as sweet alternatives. Reserve the candy consumption for special occasions.
Tip #2 – Limit the Amount and Frequency of Sweet Snacks
If sweet snacks are a tradition in your family, consider making them a more infrequent treat for birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations. Provide reasonable portions and be sure that your child brushes and flosses his or her teeth after consuming such foods. Make them part of a celebration and teach your child that some foods are for celebrations only.
Tip #3 – Don’t Forget to Schedule Dental Appointments
We make your child's trip to the dentist fun, educational, and interactive. Our young patients actually look forward to their dental cleanings and exams because they are our special guests while they are here. We can help your little one understand how sugar can damage their teeth, provide oral hygiene instruction, and help them improve their home habits with hands-on demonstrations. They will also receive a reward for cooperating!
